Jasimen Phillips

Phillips, born in 1986 in Los Angeles, California, came of age during a period of rapid technological change, an experience that continues to inform her artistic practice. As an African American woman artist, she investigates questions of identity, language, and cultural translation, drawing from personal experience as well as broader cultural histories. Her work explores the evolving relationship between humans and technology, examining how these forces shape perception, connection, and selfhood.

She earned her degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, majoring in German Studies with minors in Afro-American Studies and Spanish. A self-taught painter, Phillips integrates interdisciplinary research and independent study into her practice, merging historical painting traditions with contemporary concerns. Her conceptual approach enables her to create immersive compositions that explore universal human conditions through the lenses of gender and cultural identity, while critically engaging the tension between the physical and digital, the individual and the collective.

Phillips has exhibited at institutions including the Torrance Art Museum and the Santa Paula Art Museum and has delivered talks on art and artificial intelligence at Loyola Marymount University. Through research, experimentation, and lived experience, she continues to engage audiences in conversations about identity, technology, and the human condition.
